November 22, 2019

Sheena Peters, Account Manager for Whitinger Strategic Services recently completed the 10-week Academy for Community Leadership course.

The Academy for Community Leadership (ACL) takes place each fall and is intended for people who want to be more involved in community efforts in Muncie & Delaware County. The program is offered by the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce and Ball State’s Office of Community Engagement.

Peters, along with 21 other participants, attended each of the 10 sessions on important topics including the history of Muncie, local government and politics, the role of religion in the community, community planning perspectives, business and economic perspectives, social, cultural, and artistic perspectives, education, and health services in the community.

As a participant, Sheena attended a city council meeting and completed a group project by volunteering at Inside Out for their monthly food pantry. This project included working alongside seven other classmates, bagging and distributing food for community members in need. The program wrapped up with each participant writing an essay and a group presentation in which they shared their experience with the rest of the class.

“ACL was an incredible experience that allowed me to get to know more about the community I’ve been a part of for over a decade now,” stated Sheena. “This program gave me a deeper insight into the strength and vitality residents have shown along with informing me of the rich history of the Ball family, women’s suffrage, and even connections to Bob Ross. We also learned more about the issues that our community faces, and it brought awareness to the numerous organizations and people who are continually working to make improvements. I’m proud to be a part of this program with my fellow classmates and pleased that I can become more involved in Muncie and use the knowledge I learned here to serve my community well.”
